Skinnygirl Protein Tasty Nutrition Shakes Review and Recipe

Let’s talk about my favorite macronutrient…protein.

Protein is absolutely essential to your daily diet.

With my busy lifestyle, I often find it hard to get enough protein at breakfast, lunch, or during my snacks and often find myself compensating for my lack of protein by trying to consume it all at dinner.

This is no bueno.

Luckily Skinnygirl has come out with these new Skinnygirl Protein Tasty Nutrition Shakes to help us reap some of the benefits of added protein:

Metabolism: Protein speeds up your metabolism because the body uses more calories to break down protein compared to fat or carbohydrates.

Oxygen: Protein carries oxygen throughout our bodies.

Immunity: Protein provides antibodies to protect us from infections.

Maintain Healthy Weight: Protein helps you feel full and satisfied. Research suggests getting 30% of calories from protein may help curb appetite.

Muscle Health: Getting protein in our bodies within 30 minutes after exercise supports lean muscle growth and recovery.

So, how much protein do we really need?

To calculate your protein needs use this formula:

Weight (lb.) x .38 = Grams of protein needed/day

The recommended dietary allowance for protein is 46 grams/day for the average woman.

We can achieve this by getting at least 25-30 grams of protein from a total of 3 meals and 10-15 grams of protein from 1-2 snacks daily.

The truth is: We all snack A LOT, and we should, but let’s all make an effort to snack wisely. This allows us to avoid consuming our energy from sugary snacks or not even snacking at all which can make us feel tired in the middle of the day.

This is not fun.

WE NEED ENERGY. Good energy and good protein.

I got the chance to try the newest product from the Skinnygirl line…Skinnygirl Protein Tasty Nutrition Shakes, a few weeks ago.

IMG_0249

Each 11.5 oz. bottle has 80 calories, 0g sugar, and 12 grams of protein. Plus, they are gluten-free and low fat.

With these amazing nutritional facts, I was flooooooored.

The Rich Chocolate Brownie flavor was ultra creamy, with the perfect chocolate flavor, not too intense and the perfect cold snack after a hot, humid run here in Texas. It literally tasted like I was drinking dessert…only a healthy dessert

The Vanilla Bean Sundae held true to it’s name…it tastes just like vanilla bean ice cream. All you need is a cherry on top.

IMG_0250

I was absolutely wowed by how good these protein shakes were.

Very impressive Skinnygirl.

These Skinnygirl Protein Tasty Nutrition Shakes are available at Walmart and Skinnygirldaily.com and will be coming to other retailers soon.

The shakes come in a 4-pack and are $5.78 at Walmart.

Now, let’s get creative.

You can actually use these protein shakes in just about any recipe that calls for milk or liquid.

Let’s bake.

More specifically, let’s put that Vanilla Bean Sundae protein shake into banana bread.

Vanilla Bean Protein Banana Bread.

Sesame King Tahini Review and Giveaway

Let’s talk about one of my all time favorite ingredients to use in the kitchen.

When I was little, I probably would have said that my favorite “ingredient” was pop-tarts or any kind of sugary cereal.

Boy, have I come a long way.

I use this ingredient practically every day.

It’s tahini, otherwise known as sesame seeds that are pulverized to form a creamy, smooth, seed butter.

It’s used a ton in Middle Eastern cooking.

I use it to make hummus, salad dressings, and as a little sauce for my vegetables.

It can also be used to make baba ghanoush and halvah.

So, when I was contacted by Sesame King to sample some of their tahini flavors…I was floooored!

Seasame King Tahini is made from only the purest, natural, sesame seeds.

It’s also gluten-free and Non-GMO!

It’s absolutely delicious on bread, right from the jar, and the perfect addition to your favorite recipe.

I chose to try the Roasted Tahini and Garlic Tahini flavors.

Sesame King also offers flavors such as Light Roast, Honey, Cajun, and Tomato Basil.

Seriously, I wanted to try them all after my experience with the roasted and garlic flavors.

The garlic flavor was perfectly seasoned, not overpowering at all and added the perfect flavor to my garlic hummus, without actually having to add more garlic.

I used the roasted flavor to make my chickpea salad which was absolutely life changing!

IMG_0088

These little delicate chickpeas are paired with zesty red onion

and tossed in a creamy, tangy, apple cider vinegar/tahini dressing.

Skinny Girl Snack Swap 2.0 Review and Giveaway!

Y’all…I apologize for the lack of posting over the past couple of weeks.

I have been staying in tip top shape running around like a chicken with my head cut off.

My days usually look something like this: eat breakfast, workout, eat lunch, school, internship, eat dinner, sleep.

Pretty much.

Let’s just say I am glad I even have time to eat.

Eating is super important to me and when I’m on the go, it can be extremely stressful and difficult to eat a good meal.

I am a three meals a day kind of person, but I still have hunger pangs mid-afternoon.

That’s where my healthy snacks come in handy.

Because I have a sweet tooth, it is often hard to turn down anything dessert-like. However, I can usually satisfy most of my cravings with healthier options.

This usually involves a banana w/ smear of peanut butter or cashew butter, or Greek yogurt, with fresh fruit, cinnamon, and a bit of stevia mixed in.

Or, I go for my ultimate snack: toasted coconut over a sliced banana with a bit of cocoa powder.

Guess what? My snacking woes just got sooooooo much easier.

Last year I posted about the Skinnygirl Snack Swap.

Basically, Skinnygirl encourages women to swap out their snacks for healthier options with the Skinnygirl Snack Swap Campaign.

Yes, you just have to swap one of your snacks for a healthier snack…it’s that easy.

But wait…Skinnygirl has it’s own Skinnygirl Snack Swap website which features playful tools that ask users to choose their favorite snack, and then personally picks healthier options  to match that craving.

Oh, yes, that is awesome technology.

Well, that was version 1.0.

Allow me to introduce you to the even bigger and better Skinnygirl Snack Swap version 2.0.

Everything is the same with the interactive tools.

The main difference between the previous and new version is that Skinnygirl has added 27 new recipes
that match the flavor profiles of their Skinnygirl Tasty Nutrition Bars!

This means that you can find flavor profiles that match the Banana Oatmeal Dark Chocolate Bar, the Dark Chocolate Multigrain Pretzel Bar, the Chocolate Peanut Butter with Sea Salt Bar, the Lemon Swirl Bar, the Dark Chocolate Almond with Coconut Bar, and the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Protein Bar.

I know…it’s pretty amazing.

The site has a variety of nutritionist-approved healthy snack swap recipes.

Plus, you can join in on the fun by participating in the snack swap through social media.

Just use the #sgsnackswap hashtag on FacebookTwitter, and Instagram to let us know that you have chosen to snack healthier.

Here’s the best part.

There is a giveaway.

Yes, I know…Skinnygirl is pretty awesome.

Y’all this Skinnygirl Snack Swap is legit.

I chose a recipe to try from the snack swap and it was crazy good.

I had to stick to my coconut + dark chocolate guns and go with this flavor profile.

IMG_0070

I mean, just look at that chocolate goodness.

IMG_0073

Yes, that is a brownie.

IMG_0072

That chocolate frosting is seriously the icing on the cake.

IMG_0074

It’s made with avocado.

Don’t be scared.

IMG_0082

It’s a genius idea + it adds a healthy dose of good fat.

Did I mention these things are paleo, gluten-free, and grain-free?

Coconut Almond Brownies
Author:
Recipe type: Brownies, Dessert
Cuisine: American
Prep time:
Cook time:
Total time:
Serves: 16

A rich, melt in your mouth chocolate brownies topped w/ shaved coconut and sliced almonds. Gluten-free, paleo, grain-free. These “paleo”inspired brownies use coconut flour, which contains significant amounts of fiber and protein, and are sweetened with maple syrup. The frosting is loaded with healthy fats since its base is an unlikely food – avocado! And to top it all off, the nutrient packed almond coconut topping gives a satisfying texture contrast to the fudginess of the brownies.
Ingredients
  • Brownies
  • ∙ ½ cup less 1 Tbsp coconut flour (50 g)
  • ∙ ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ∙ ½ cup unsweetened applesauce
  • ∙ 2 Tbsp coconut oil
  • ∙ ½ tsp salt
  • ∙ ½ tsp baking soda
  • ∙ 3 eggs, at room temperature
  • ∙ ½ cup plus 2 Tbsp maple syrup
  • ∙ 1 tsp coconut extract
  • Frosting
  • ∙ 1 ripe avocado
  • ∙ ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • ∙ ½ cup pure maple syrup
  • Topping
  • ∙ ½ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • ∙ ¼ cup sliced almonds
  • ∙ Pinch of salt
Instructions
  1. Preheat the oven to 300ºF and grease an 8x8 or 9x9 glass baking dish (8x8 or 9x9).
  2. Mix together all ingredients either by hand, with an electric mixer or with a highspeed
  3. blender.
  4. Pour into the baking dish and bake for 30-35 minutes, until a toothpick inserted into the
  5. center comes out clean.
  6. Add all of the frosting ingredients to a food processor and pulse to combine. Continue to pulse until the mixture is smooth and fudgy, scraping down the sides as needed.
  7. In a hot, dry skillet, add the ingredients for the topping. Toast until brown and fragrant.
  8. Be careful; coconut burns quickly.
  9. When the brownies have cooled completely, top them with the frosting and then sprinkle with toasted coconut and almonds.
  10. Slice and serve or store in airtight container in refrigerator.

Let’s talk snacks.

It’s practically my favorite subject.

Snacks in the morning, snacks in the afternoon, snacks after dinner time 🙂

Today I am super excited to share with you the release of the new Skinnygirl Tasty Nutrition Bar flavors.

IMG_0854

Let me tell you…these tasty nutrition bars are called tasty for a reason.

Well, more like a ton of reasons.

Spring is a time where we break out of our cozy jackets and snow boots to enjoy sunshine and warmth.

Spring is also a time to savor fresh in-season spring produce and lighter salads, in lieu of pumpkin pie and comforting casserole.

Skinnygirl is helping us accomplish just that with their new flavors.

First up, the two new flavors of Skinnygirl Tasty Nutrition Bars are Dark Chocolate Almond with Coconut and the first non-chocolate flavor, Lemon Swirl.

Y’all know how I feel about coconut, so naturally, I was excited to try it.

The Dark Chocolate Almond with Coconut Tasty Nutrition bar was everything I wanted and more, crunchy almonds, sweet coconut, with the perfect amount of chocolate to balance it all out.IMG_0857

Now y’all…Lemon Swirl is where it’s at.

IMG_0858

Especially for Spring.

The Lemon Swirl Tasty Nutrition bar is light and refreshing, the perfect alternative to a slice of lemon cream pie.

Last but not least, Skinnygirl has introduced The Skinny Girl Tasty Nutrition Protein Bar as an extension for those that are looking for more protein and fewer calories in a snack.

Y’all…the Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Tasty Nutrition Protein Bar tastes just like a chocolate chip cookie.

IMG_0859

But what? It’s healthy? With 10 grams of protein and 7 grams of fiber with only 120 calories…it’s a healthy snackers dream!

Each of these delicious new Skinnygirl Tasty Nutrition bars are under 170 calories, protein packed, fiber filled, kosher, contain no artificial sweetened, and are GLUTEN-FREE!

Like I said, a dream…but actually reality. 🙂

Snap Kitchen

Y’all…I have been slacking on posts lately.

You know, life.

I’m back.

Hello.

Let’s chat about my visit to Snap Kitchen.

Last Monday I was so excited to visit my faveeeeee healthy take-away store, Snap Kitchen.

I have been loving me some Snap Kitchen since it opened in Austin, Tx when I was living there for my first go round’ at college.

It’s only gotten better from there.

At Snap Kitchen, I had the honor of speaking with their amazing dietitian, Claire, who ran me through a list of their delicious menu items.

The best part was that she gave me a run-down of the seasonal menu changes, which incorporate new paleo dishes that I cannot wait to try!

Then it was go time.

I got to choose a couple of meals to take home and try.

It was like a dream.

Why I love Snap Kitchen: 1). Their menu uses fresh, quality ingredients 2). They focus on seasonal ingredients. Some of their dishes emphasize serving the best, most seasonal produce for that time of year 3). The meals are 100% healthy…no fillers, additives, preservatives, stuff you can’t pronounce. 100% clean eating meals, snacks, and drinks. Most of them are vegan, paleo, and/or gluten-free or grain-free friendly.

I absolutely looooooove it!

The great thing about Snap Kitchen is the diversity of their menu.

I had Grass Fed Beef Meatballs and Peppers

IMG_0771

and was blown away by how flavorful the dish was. Just picture tender beef meatballs, seasoned to perfection, covered in a zesty tomato sauce, and placed over a bed of  sauteed bell peppers and onion.

If you love Italian…this is your dish.

And I mean, who doesn’t love Italian.

I was also really impressed with the breakfast dish that I chose.

IMG_0772

I loved the idea of making an egg sandwich with two chicken sausage patties.

IMG_0778

Plus, sweet potato fries for breakfast?

SOLD!

My favorite dishes were the Ginger Glazed Salmon and the Ginger Glazed Chicken.

IMG_0774

Y’all. These dishes are addicting.

IMG_0781

Of course you have your choice of succulent salmon, or juicy, tender chicken.

IMG_0784

But then, perfectly seasoned fresh green beans AND MASHED KABOCHA SQUASH.

If you didn’t know, my addiction is kabocha squash.

I get depressed when it goes out of season.

The mash is slightly sweet, but with every bite, you experience this little heaven of a ginger glaze that is perfectly tangy and sweet.

I can’t even.

The good news is that if you live in Dallas, Austin, or Houston Texas, you should have a Snap Kitchen right around the corner.

Get to a location now and experience so of their fabulous, fresh, healthy dishes.

Then, come back here and tell me what you enjoyed most.

OR if you have already been, I would love to know your favorite dish!

Make sure to check out all the above links for menu information as well as ingredient and nutritional stats for each dish!
